Bitrate controls how much data your stream sends every second, which directly affects image clarity and playback smoothness. Getting it right helps your stream look better while staying stable for more viewers.
Understanding Bitrate
- Video Bitrate: The amount of video data sent per second, usually measured in Kbps.
- Audio Bitrate: The amount of audio data sent each second.
- Resolution and Frame Rate: Higher resolutions and frame rates need more bitrate to hold quality.
Recommended Bitrate Settings

Note: Your upload speed should be at least 1.5x your total bitrate to reduce buffering and dropped frames.
Optimizing Bitrate in OBS Studio
- 1Open OBS Studio.
- 2Go to Settings > Output.
- 3Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- 4Under Streaming Tab:
- Encoder: Choose x264 for CPU encoding or NVENC/AMD for GPU encoding.
- Rate Control: Use CBR (Constant Bitrate) for the most stable streaming results.
- Bitrate: Enter the bitrate that matches your resolution, frame rate, and upload speed.
- Keyframe Interval: Set this to 2 seconds.
- Preset: Select "veryfast" for x264 or "quality" for NVENC.
- Profile: Select "high" for strong quality and broad platform compatibility.
