Defining your audience

Write down one viewer, the problem they showed up with, and whether they want to learn or be entertained. "Everyone" is not an audience.

Evergreen

One person, not a demographic spreadsheet

A useful audience note fits on a card. Age range is the least interesting part. What they tried, what annoyed them, and what they hope happens in the next ten minutes is the part you can write to.

Entertainment audiences stay for a feeling. Educational audiences stay for a result. You can mix them, but the opening has to pick one. A tutorial that starts like a variety show loses the person who came to fix something.

Questions worth answering on paper

If you cannot answer these, your next ten posts will feel random.

  • What are they trying to do this month?
  • What have they already tried that did not work?
  • Where do they watch you: commute, desk, second monitor, couch?
  • Would they rather feel seen, or leave with a step they can do today?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need personas?

One is enough at the start. A second persona is useful when you notice two crowds using you for different jobs, like "wants to go live" and "only posts clips."
